This channel is all about gaming. Be it old or new. So, hopefully eventually you'll be able to find content of all kinds here. New uploads at least once a week so there's always something new around the corner.
DOS Time Travel - Role Playing Games (RPGs)
A look at DOS RPGs in perspective of time, and through a prism of interesting but not necessarily the best or most popular games. So, kinda take on the state of the genre without leaning on the biggest and most well known hits that everyone expects to hear about in videos like this one.

This is the first episode in my new series, in which I'd like to check some of those less popular games out in a particular subgenre in a year-by-year basis, with one game chosen per year. They will most likely not be the most popular titles for the year, as I've plenty of videos covering these already. Might and magic 3 is probably my favorite game of all time i remember getting everything like 3x lol i never went so hard on any game since 645231 lol
Homm2 was the best
Just bought Superhero League of Hoboken for $1.50AUD last week on GOG!
I love lists like this because Good Old Games lets me actually find them!
Would like to add Dinopark Tycoon +1
Lords of the Realm II what a gem of a game
Yeah, hard to catch up on anything now that you've revealed the power of eXoDOS! Firstly and mostly, thank you for clueing us all in, amazing but I don't have the bandwidth or space of nearly 1tb of mostly all the DOS games. Went with the 5gb one, and I can't seem to play a single game at this rate because I can't stop looking at the and reading more indepth than I ever have on the games I got from TAC auctions back in the day, and Home Of The Underdogs. Clearly, the best DOS frontend known to mankind, or not, the best known to this man!
RPGs are my favorite genre of video game. This video was a nice mix of games I played and have fond memories of and games I really should play.
IIRC Q3 didn't introduced the rocket jumping. It was a kind of a bug in Q1, and ID decided to leave it. First copy HoMM3 that I had was bought on Stadion Xlecia. This version crashed when beholders attacked. Whenever.
blood and carmageddon just the best games ever created
4 crystals of trazere was a sequel to Bloodwych? AMAZING thanks for sharing man. all of these games look legitimately good.
They do, don't they? And they're the B-team of games for their respective years. A good average/median example of the games in the genre. :)
Trying to find a shareware game that was Dos/Win3.1. Point and click overhead roguelike with breakable weapons that started off with someone telling you to "not come back without it!" It MAY have been an earlier version of Rogue itself but have yet to find screenshots or video
Bloodwych was awesome
Yep :)
Ooh, nice games! You say these are not the most popular? They all have something interesting going for them. I've never imported a character or party to any game. Are they often fully "leveled up" characters or can they also start from scratch (loincloth, club and grow leg hair potion recipe only)? I think my gravestone will say "she's not here". As in, no need to come visit my grave, since there's nothing there that is "me". I had a great uncle who wrote little poems for gravestones. He did one for himself too. Oh. Now I understand the story behind the character named Sir Poopy Pants. Poor guy... Someone give him a nice cup of tea. Pst. Do you know how to get the recipe for that "unsmell my feel" potion? :D
Oh, they are definitely not bad. Not saying that. They're just not the A-Team members for their respective years in the genre. They're the median choices. And average for their genres. Back then, actually many RPGs that were series allowed you to move your party between them, and more often than not, they moved with all they had. Sometimes something was missing, like an uber strong item or something, but generally speaking it was a common practice. I like the "she's not here" thing. Makes sense, on many levels. Unsmell my feet potion? It's actually pretty easy, though it's not a potion per say, but balm actually. You take one part soap or shower gel and nine parts water, mix, place on smelly feet and rub in energetically for a minute or two, rinse and the smell should be gone. If necessary repeat until the effect persists.
@@OldAndNewVideoGames No, I don't assume you mean the games are bad, because they are obviously not. I'm just surprised they're not more popular. :) Oh, so the option to import old characters is kind of an option to cheat at the game. :D And to get games in the same series. Sneaky. ;) Actually, I say (internally) "he/she isn't here" when I have to visit any grave. I'd rather honour a person's memory than their gravestone. Oh. Wow. Yup. Soap and water balm for smelly feet. You are so right! XD And it's so simple! I'll go make some right now.
Where Lands of Lore. I want to finish Stonekeep one day. Furthest I went was Fearie Realm, but sadly mine save games went fuck themselves.
Lands of Lore is in many of my former videos, one of my last few "Essential DOS Games" too. This one's, as I mention in the intro, is part of the series that look at particular years of DOS gaming (89-97) through a perspective of B-listers in a particular genre. So, no number one's or two's in the video. I've other ones for these hits. :) And yeah, I think everyone who played the game hated fairies. xD
Stonekeep is awesome, the story of its creation was one of the first examples of a long and troubled production cycle. Also all the Realms of Arkania games are hidden gems! Good nostalgia roundup, looking forward to the next RPG feature 😄😄
The next one in "DOS Time Travel" series will be turn-based strategies, and then, I think, point'n'click adventure games. I've something else for RPGs planned but it's sooo much work and it is something I feel most may not like...
The German pronunciation was pretty much perfect 👍
Thanks! While I don't speak the language I live like a stone throw away from the border, so you know... I can imitate the language a little. I just love how long some words in German get. :)
I went and bought Stonekeep blindly, for some reason thinking it was a sequel to the legendary Dungeon Master. Seemingly shallow hack'n slash, the game mechanics were surprisingly deep as I got into it. And I will forever hate the fairies in that game, and the gamebreaking bugs that forced me to lose days of progress on several occasions.
Oh these were the patchless times, weren't they? You got the game, and what you got was the game. No day-1 fixes. xD
I remember playing a game when I was a kid a old game that was like a SCUMM sci-fi game that you would be some spaceship captain or something. visiting a planet(or crashing on it or something like that ) that had a peculiar 3d art. I remember that at some point you would get some tools like screwdrivers but they all looked lightsabers. there was a section that had a desert with a mirage that you could click to walk towards it but you would never reach . and there was a place with trees with fruits of different colors and shapes and there was some puzzle I could never solve with it. I don't remember the game name. Can you help?
Bloodwych is unknown to me. Looks interesting for ‘89 though. I’m a bit confused by the aspect ratio of the footage here? Looks like it’s ultra wide? 8:12 certainly looks like Arnie? From his Mr. Universe days. Ah yes, remember when game devs didn’t care about copyright & just used any image or especially audio they wanted? Barbarian, on the Amiga at least, used a bunch of sound clips taken from the movie adaptation of Red Sonja. 😄 I don’t know Darklands & it’s kind of ugly for a game you speak highly of? Superhero League of Hoboken does look original & unique? I do know Stonekeep because of the 3D 1st person navigation but I never got in to it. Speaking of 3D navigation Shadows Over Riva did it better but I just couldn’t get in to the non 1st person parts. I do know of Amulets & Armour & it was well thought through but again (& yes I know this is just me) I just couldn’t get in to it, even though I love the Elder Scrolls games. Well I think you knew this wasn’t going to be my video but I appreciate you educating me on these games, thanks.
Brace yourself! It's not widescreen at all. Bloodwych could be played in local co-op, and then each of the players would get that wide screen, one on top of another on a single monitor. So, when you played alone, you only got one. Darklands is the best game you've not played. If you're into RPGs. This one's text heavy so not sure if you'd enjoy it, but it's sooooo worth the time and effort. It's really a hidden gem, and arguably the best game in the video. Yeah, I kinda figured RPGs are not your cup of tea. But the next one will be turn based strategies, and I've even more B Team of games there than here. And one after point'n'click adventure B-listers and after that (this one's not confirmed yet, though I have a list of games already) pinballs. So, I'm sure something will land for you. :)
"Ice Queen" and no mention of your boss's wife? Who are you and what did you do with OaNVG? ;)
You know I was thinking the same thing? ;) But... And I have an explanation for it. She's on holiday for a week. So, my exposure to her demonic self has been very limited this last few days. xD
My favorite genre
Even with B-listers on the table?
@@OldAndNewVideoGames Especially with B-listers on the table
Shadows over Riva was a fantastic game that made you feel like an idiot for not purchasing torches. Because when night fell, it got pitch black and you had no way of seeing where you were going. I spent many hours running around in complete darkness, bumping into houses while trying to find an inn.
And *that's* what makes the game great! :)
Up to 1991 I was mostly playing C64 RPGs, like Neuromancer and Legend of Blacksilver! So I started with Darklands (a remake is being made, as we speak!), and have all the RPGs on your video after that! Everybody needs to remember, all the Realms of Arkania are Simulations more than RPGs, so there is lots to take care off. Like System Shock or Dues Ex!
System Shock and Deus Ex, also great games! :)
25:15 why are you unaliving all of Santa's helpers?
They had more than enough fun already!
@@OldAndNewVideoGames Think of the kids!
22:17 "the skeleton is blinded" Wut? HOW?
Good question! The answer is rather simple though. With "game logic". ;)
Bloodwych! I had that one...
A classic!
14:43 "I cast 'shid my pants' as a free action!"
Well... In real life you can. ;)
13:57 the assassin heir will bring either peace or pieces (of his enemies) to his kingdom. Whatever works.
:)
11:45 I'm pretty sure "Unsmell my feet" was a Tony Braxton song
She made her whole career out of it. "Unsmell my feet, tell me they're not stinky again..."
@@OldAndNewVideoGames when you walked out the door, a fresh breeze of air came into my life...
Unstink these socks, I fumigated so many times!
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this series. As you may remember I used to play a time travel game that doesn't exist any more. I am now convinced that it is one of those Mandela effects. There's also an old folk song that doesn't exist any more. I was hoping it might come up in this series but upon finding a song I liked that no longer exists, I am starting to think they will never be seen or heard of again for some mysterious reason.
Well, thanks for watching and keep hoping. Just because I don't remember it out of the top of my head, don't mean I wont stumble upon it in the future. :)
@@OldAndNewVideoGames I am still hoping you will. Thanks dude.
@@mantovannni There's still at least 5000 more DOS Games I've not covered. ;)
7:40 wow, the Amazon REALLY didn't like you giving her stuff to that other dude. She was smiling up until you touched her shite.

I would like my gravestone to say: "H(ero)R(ecruitment) is NOT your friend"
Noted, now go and die for the kingd... I mean MAKE US PROUD! ;)
@@OldAndNewVideoGames can't you make yourselves proud? I'm kinda busy with looting gravesit... I mean, dungeons!
While you're correct about the rough translation of "Das Schwarze Auge", there's actually an official translation of the title for video games and pen and paper games: The Dark Eye.
So... I was pretty close. ;)
Shindig sounds like an uncool dude. Like someone working in an HR department.
I recently learned that in the company I work for (which belongs to an older married couple), and employs something like 60+ people, there's no one in the HR (single person department btw) that harassment could be reported to. Not that I was planning on doing it, but I enjoy finding holes in logic and operational algorithms, and they told me that if anything happened, I should go to the police. Which is just ridiculous. xD
@@OldAndNewVideoGames you mean the same police that apparently ignores your boss' wife reenacting Carmageddon races in real life?

Thanks for watching and I'm glad that you liked it! I've many more higher quality DOS videos now, so if you liked this one, I'm sure you'll like the newer ones. Like Obscure DOS Games series. Available as 50 singular episodes, or as 5 bigger "full seasons" videos, and also all rolled into one, as a close to 16-hour long behemot. ;)
where's the thumbnail from?
Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight. A fantastic game in its own right!
@@OldAndNewVideoGames Thanks. I've even played it but seems like I've had totally forgotten about Waterdeep!
Just recently knew that there's Lost Vikings sequel. Man it looks horrible compared to original 🤮
The puzzles are good though, later on especially. But yeah, the graphics are a miss.
I didnt know DOS actually still existed back in 96
There are games released for it now even. I mean freeware hobbyist releases and they're very rare, but there are. I'd consider 1997 as it's last good year, 1998 was more of a compilation/gold versions year, and in 1999 no one cared for it anymore.
RPG’s on PC vs RPG’s on console. Its fun to see what different playstyles was popular on the exact same genre. On one hand we have nes, snes and Sega etc that had the style like final fantasy, breath of fire, dragon quest, chronotrigger etc. Top down strategy rpg’s And on PC we have these games that you just showcased, FPS. Most of the time RTS games. The RPG genre is one i never really spent time on. On a seperate note. Was it eligal for adventures to wear clothes in “spirit of adventure”?
I've a separate best RPGs or something like that video (or videos, I've done so many I honestly don't remember), that shows off some of the best games in the genre. This series looks at interesting ones, often pretty darn good, but not the very best. So, if you're keen on best of the best, check those other videos out. Also, yeah, consoles and PC banked on entirely different kind of an RPG. And it makes it all so interesting. I should really get into Genesis/SNES at some point. Oh, and all adventurers have it in their contracts. There's a separate clause for clothes or not clothes. They just gotta read the small print.
I like your funny accent. Russia? Sounds something Eastern Europe. (I'm from Germany, we sound creepy, so no pun intended^^)
Poland :)
Smash egg
xD
Really nice games in this one! Oh! And one I actually played back in the day, albeit on PC. Grand Prix Circuit. I was too used to arcade racers with indestructible cars, that the crashes were pretty shocking at first. Did the characters in Might and Magic 2 die of old age waiting for the player to complete the game? :D Ouch! I'm glad most games aren't like that. :S
There's more games like it. You can actually start with a party of grandpas in Darklands, as you can add age (and experience) to your characters at party creation, which calls for a certain balance between skill, strength and age.
@@OldAndNewVideoGames I do remember you talking about games with that mechanic and it sounds very interesting. I was just concerned about feeling guilty about game characters growing old waiting for me to finish their game. :S You know, like those virtual pets.
